Saksamaalt pärit noor munk Hinricus on Tallinna dominiiklaste kloostris raskel ajal: linnas möllab katk, algamas on usutülid ning 1525. a. suletakse klooster. Hinricus peab rangelt kinni kloostrikorrast, ta ei lase maistel tunnetel ennast eksitada. Vaid õilsameelsusest hakkab ta kloostrisse pandud noore nunna Agathe pihiisaks, et kasvatada temast pühakut. Romaani taustaks on XVI sajandi alguse Tallinn, kuhu jõuavad sõnumid Martin Lutheri usureformatsioonist.
