Käesolev töö hõlmab lühiajalist (1906-1914), ent siiski olulist ajajärku «Vanemuise» teatri ajaloost, perioodi, mida tavatseme nimetada üldisemas mõttes Karl Menningu teatriks.
Teatriloolase ja -publitsisti sulest rikkalikule arhiivmaterjalile toetuv monograafia meie esimesest professionaalsest teatrijuhist, kutseteatri rajajast Karl Menningust (1874-1941) võtab vaatluse alla tema elutöö «Vanemuise» teatris aastail 1906-1914, mil siin pandi kindel alus psühholoogilise realismi teatri ansamblitõdedele, rahvusdramaturgia sihipärasele arendamisele ning neile lavapedagoogilistele tõdedele, mis lubab pidada tema kasvatatud näitlejaidki aegumatu stiili ja kooli esindajaiks, lavaharitlasteks. Murranguaja teatri probleeme ja pingeid jälgib autor avaramaski kultuuripoliitilises kontekstis, laskmata silmist üldist teatrisuundumust ka Euroopas.
