Tuntud vene geograaf Pjotr Petrovitš Semjonov-Tjan-Šanski, kes üle 40 aasta juhtis Vene Geograafia Seltsi tegevust, tungis esimese uurijana salapärase mägismaa Tjan-Šani sisemusse.
Ta uuris tol ajal teadusele tundmatut Issõk-Kuli järve, avastas kümneid uusi taimeliike, nägi Han-Tengri majesteetlikku püramiidi.
Oma reiside ajal Tjan-Šanis tundis Semjonov elavat huvi kirgiisi ja kasahhi rahva vastu.
Geograaf õppis tähelepanelikult tundma nende igapäevast elu, kuulas nende rahvapärimusi. Kohalik elanikkond nägi temas lähedast sõpra ja pühendas teda kõikidesse oma elu saladustesse. Neil aegadel oli kirgiisi ja kasahhi rahvale suureks õnnetuseks omavahelised relvastatud kokkupõrked ja Pjotr Petrovitš Semjonov nägi palju vaeva, et lepitada vaenulikke pooli.
