Märgil on kujutatud Tartu vanalinnale iseloomulikke gooti arhitektuuri elemente. Kiri "AD 1030" (ladina keeles: Anno Domini - "Issanda aastal") viitab linna traditsioonilisele asutamiskuupäevale. Kroonikate kohaselt juhtis Kiievi vürst Jaroslav Tark 1030. aastal sõjakäiku Eesti maade vastu ja rajas vallutatud Tarbatu asula kohale Jurjevi kindluse (nüüdne Tartu).

На значке изображены элементы готической архитектуры, характерные для старого города Тарту. Надпись «AD 1030» (лат. Anno Domini — «в год Господень») отсылает к традиционной дате основания города. Согласно летописям, в 1030 году киевский князь Ярослав Мудрый совершил поход на земли эстов и основал на месте захваченного городища Тарбату крепость Юрьев (ныне Тарту).
