The Adoration of the Magi or Adoration of the Kings or Visitation of the Wise Men is the name traditionally given to the subject in the Nativity of Jesus in art in which the three Magi, represented as kings, especially in the West, having found Jesus by following a star, lay before him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, and worship him. It is related in the Bible by Matthew 2:11: "On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another path".

Gentile da Fabriano (Fabriano c. 1370 – Rome 1427)

At the end of a long journey, the Magi arrive in the presence of the Messiah who has just come into the world guided by the comet star, and prostrate themselves at the feet of the Holy Family offering precious gifts. Dressed in extraordinarily rich and fashionable clothes, the Magi are accompanied by a multi-ethnic procession, which also includes exotic animals, which imply that they come from the Far East. The journey of the Magi, from the sighting of the comet to the stop at the palace of King Herod, up to the return home, is narrated in three distinct episodes in the background of the composition, harmonized in the mountainous landscape of the horizon but visually separated by the three arches of the cornice. The altarpiece, equipped with a splendid carpentry decorated in the side pillars with painted flowers, it is completed by a predella with stories from Christ's childhood: from the left the Nativity, the Flight into Egypt and the Presentation in the Temple; the compartment with the Presentation in the Temple is a modern copy of the original, kept in the Louvre Museum in Paris. The painting was commissioned by the wealthy banker and refined lover of the arts Palla Strozzi for the family chapel located in the sacristy of the church of Santa Trinita in Florence. The panel, which bears the master's signature and the date 1423, constitutes the masterpiece of Gentile, the most important exponent of international Gothic in Italy, which demonstrates an extraordinary technical mastery in the use of particular processes, as attested by the conspicuous quantity of leaf metallic, partially embossed in relief to give three-dimensionality to objects such as the spurs of the knight or the hilt of the sword. In the predella, instead of the gold background of medieval tradition, the scenes present the blue sky, an indication of the interest in nature and the incipient affirmation of the cultural and aesthetic canons of the Renaissance.
