Märgi põhikiri kinnitati 28. mail 1934. Rinnamärk sümboliseerib 1. suurtükiväegrupi isikkoosseisu kokkukuuluvust ning tahet kaitsta maa ja rahva iseseisvust sama ohvrimeelselt, kindlalt ja võidukalt, nagu seda tegi Vabadussõjas 1. suurtükiväepolk, kellele panid aluse Eesti vapramad pojad Tallinnas 21. novembril 1918. Pommi allserval kaarena paiknev aastaarv 1917 tähistab 1. Eesti suurtükiväe brigaadi asutamist.
