1812. aasta Isamaasõja sündmused veeresid Eesti lähedusse. Riia eeslinnad põlesid, Kuramaal käisid verised lahingud. Ka tuhanded mehed Eestist ja Lätist kaitsesid sõdurite või maakaitseväelastena riiki vaenlase sissetungi vastu.
