24. septembril 1803. a. allkirjastatud tsaariukaasiga loodi vast avatud Tartu ülikoolis eesti ja soome keele lektoraat ning esimest korda ajaloos sai eesti keelest ülikooli õppeaine. Soome keele õpetamiseni esialgu küll veel ei jõutud.
Käesolev raamat on pühendatud sellele väärikale tähtpäevale. Artiklitele lisaks on raamatus eesti keele õppe ja uurimise kronoloogia Tartu ülikoolis ning, nagu juubelikogumikule kohane, pilte nii sündmustest kui ka isikutest.
