Bertel THORVALDSEN (born November 19, 1770 in Copenhagen , died March 24, 1844 in the same place) was a Danish sculptor of the so-called Golden Age . Apart from the Italian Antonio Canova , he is considered the most important sculptor of classicism .

The son of an Icelandic woodcarver working in Copenhagen shipyards, he started studying in the Danish capital as an 11-year-old. In 1795, after a series of other awards, he received a scholarship for a study trip to Rome . There he went two years later.

He copied ancient sculptures and started in 1802/03 a figure of Jason , which quickly made him famous. Above all, young sculptors sought his closeness by collaborating in his atelier, of which Christian Daniel Rauch , Emil Wolff and Reinhold Begas should be mentioned . Silence, harmony, noble contours, austere and modest forms connect themselves with him to an ideal of classic, often gently transfigured beauty.

After 1804 he became an academician in Florence , Copenhagen, San Luca , Milan and Munich . He created many works for the Copenhagen court or for ecclesiastical and private clients. In 1819 he traveled through Switzerland to Copenhagen and Poland , where he was commissioned to make a monument in honor of Copernicus . After returning to Rome, in 1821 he modeled the statue of Christ (for the Church of Our Lady in Copenhagen ).

Two years later he was called to make the tomb of Pope Pius VII in the Basilica of Saint Peter in Rome . Apart from that he made the equestrian statue of Maximilian I Joseph (Bavaria) in Munich, the Schiller monument in Stuttgart and the Gutenberg monument in Mainz .
