Kogupere fantaasiafilm šokolaadivabrikandist Willy Wonkast (Johnny Depp), kes otsib oma maiustusteärile pärijat. Veidrikust Wonka korraldab üleilmse loterii ja viis last leiavadki oma šokolaaditahvlist kuldse pileti. Nende seas ka vaene poiss Charlie, kes kutsutakse koos teiste õnnelikega Wonka tehasesse ekskursioonile.
Filmi aluseks on Roald Dahli samanimeline raamat, mis inspireeritud kirjaniku lapsepõlvest – Reptoni koolis õppides oli Dahl koos teiste kooliõpilastega Cadbury šokolaadivabriku proovimaitsjaks. Nimelt saatis vabrik kooliõpilastele proovimaitsmiseks uusi šokolaadisorte.
