New Yorgi võmm John McClane (Bruce Willis) saabub jõulude ajal Los Angelesse, kuhu tema abikaasa on elama asunud, et uues Nakatomi korporatsioonis karjääri teha. Perekonna rõõmuküllane taasühinemine katkestatakse kõige ootamatumal ja jõhkramal moel, kui pilvelõhkuja võtavad enda kontrolli alla Euroopa päritolu terroristid, eesotsas jõhkra ning sihikindla Hans Gruberiga (Alan Rickman).
