Selleks, et päästa oma sureva isa elu, sõlmib noor trikirattur Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage) lepingu Mefistotelesega (Peter Fonda) ning lahkub kurbusega oma elu suurimast armastusest Roxanne’ist (Eva Mendes). Aastaid hiljem kohtuvad nad taas. Tüdrukust on saanud edukas reporter, Johnnyst aga Ghost Rider, ”põrgu pearahakütt”, kelle ülesandeks on võidelda põgenenud deemonite ja muu üleloomuliku rämpsuga. Nüüd vajab Mefistoteles Johnny abi, et nurjata oma poja (Wes Bentley) plaan kõrvaldada allmaailma valitseja troonilt ning tuua põrgu üles, maapinnale.
