Tuntud koomiksi- ning joonisfilmikangelasele baseeruv film räägib miljardärist ettevõtjast Tony Starkist (Robert Downey Jr.), kes toodab USA sõjaväele relvi. Olles ärireisil üht oma leiutatud relva katsetamas, saab Stark haavata ning ta võetakse terroristide poolt pantvangiks. Terroristid sunnivad teda valmistama relvi vaenlasele, kuid Starkil on teised plaanid. Nimelt hakkab ta ehitama endale metallist kaitseülikonda, mille abil vangistusest pääseda. Tagasi koju jõudes täiustab ta oma metallist rüüd ning asub Raudmehena kurjuse jõudude vastu võitlema.
