462 lk. 1986. a. Varem novelle, luulet ja kirjandusloolisi töid kirjutanud autori esimene romaan, mis kujutab panoraamselt eesti ärakamisaja kõrgjärgu lõppu aastail 1881-1882. Romaani peategevuskohaks on Võrumaa Kanepi kihelkond, kuid tegevus siirdub ka tartumaale, Võrru, Viljandisse, Tartusse, Riiga, Peterburi ja Krimmi. Peategelasteks on Tartu Eesti Põllumeeste Seltsi esimees Mart Mitt ja Võrumaa koolmeister Märt Vares, kuid romaanis esinevad ka C. R. Jakobson, M. Veske, J. Köler, H. Treffner, J. Järv, J. Kõrv, A. Grenzstein ja mõned teised eesti kultuuriloost tuntud isikud.
