Õppis aastatel 1928–1934 Riigi Kunsttööstuskoolis
dekoratiivmaali eriala. Tema õpetajateks olid August Jansen ja Roman Nyman. Pärast ajateenistust jätkas õpinguid 1936–1939 Helsingis Soome Kunstiühingu koolis (kus tema õpetajaks oli William Lönnberg).
