Õppematerjal "Alguses on Sõna" on mõeldud piiblitundide läbiviimiseks väikerühmadele. Õppe tunnid põhinevad Ameerika evangeelse luterliku kiriku ettevalmistatud ja 1977. a. kasutusele võetud "Word of Witness" programmil, mida kasutatakse evangeelsetes luterlikes kirikutes ka Rootsis ja Saksamaal. Eesti keelde on materjal tõlgitud Kari Latvuse koostatud raamatust "Sanasta Elämä". Õppetundide toimetamise ja kasutusele võtmise eest vastutab Suomen kirkon Seurakuntatoiminnan keskusliitto koos kristliku õppekeskusega. Eestis on vastavat koolitust korraldatud EELK usuteaduse Instituudi pedagoogilise osakonna baasil.
