Käesolevas teoses abistab amatöördetektiiv Ellery Queen oma isa, politseiinspektor Richard Queeni kahe rodeoetendusel sooritatud mõrva asjaolude selgitamisel. Kõigile detektiivžanri austajatele tuntud Ellery Queen on tegelikult ameeriklastest nõbude Frederic Dannay (1905–1982) ja Manfred Bennington Lee (1905–1971) pseudonüüm. Kirjanduslikku tegevust alustasid Dannay ja Lee 1928. aastal, saates ühe ajakirja kriminaalromaanivõistlusele oma romaani „The Roman Hat Mystery“ käsikirja. Võistlusel jäi romaan küll auhinnata, kuid 1929. aastal raamatuna avaldatult saavutas see otsekohe menu.
