World Championship Snooker is a self-explanatory title for a game; pot a red followed by a colour, then all the colours in a specified order when the reds are gone. What Codemasters have done is introduce 26 real-life digitised players and commentary from the legendary Dennis Taylor. Add to that six authentic locations, approval from the major World Snooker governing body and this is a game that everyone should be raving about.

Sadly it's the detail that takes the shine off the game. All the practice in the world won't stop you getting extremely bored when the PC player wipes the floor with you--repeatedly--but you can cycle through this quickly to reduce the pain. That frustration promotes more practice and you will get to pot at least two balls before the computer resumes total domination of the frame. The controls are clearly laid out and there's a masterclass section to let you work on technique. The commentary is at least knowledgeable coming from a veteran, but all the surrounding gloss really relies upon whether you want the "be there inside the TV screen" feeling.

It's rare for such a polished game to fall down because the real thing is more fun--this being a representation of what it's like to watch rather than play snooker --Kenneth Henry
