Rannaaine käsitlejana tõusis August Mälk (1900-1987) 1930-ndail aastail eesti silmapaistvamate prosaistide hulka. Samal ajal kasutas ta ka ajaloolist ainest ning esines populaarse näitekirjanikuna. 1944. aastal pagulusse siirdunud, jätkas Mälk proosa ja draama alal, püüdes nüüd elunähtusi sügavamalt mõtestada.
