1984. aasta augustis sõitis Michigani koduperenaine Betty Mahmoody kaheks nädalaks oma mehe kodumaale Iraani. Oma õuduseks avastas ta seal, et on koos nelja-aastase tütre Mahtobiga šiitlikule islami usule andunud mehe vangid maal, kus naisi peetakse peaaegu orjadeks ja ameeriklasi põlatakse. Neil oleks lootust põgeneda ainult smuugeldajate abiga, kuid tee üle mägede on ohtlik ja lapsi ei taheta kaasa võtta.
Vaprast naisest ja tema hingematvast odüsseiast on tehtud ka film, milles peaosa mängib Oscari võitja Sally Field.
