Sallustius esitab oma versiooni Roomas 63.–62. aastal eKr võimuhaaramiseks kavandatud vandenõust, mille algatajaks oli Catilina. Tegemist on ilmselt – Caesari tapmise järel – Rooma kuulsuselt teise vandenõuga, mille laineharjal sai tuntuks Cicero, kelle kõned Catilina vastu kuuluvad Rooma kõnekunsti tippude hulka ning on andnud materjali ka Sallustiusele.
