Aasta 1958. Neli noort kosmose agentuuri töötajat on kindlad, et nendest saavad esimesed inimesed avakosmoses. Kuid siis ühel hetkel otsustab nende rühma juht neile noa selga lüüa ning meeskonna laiali saata.
Nüüd, 40 aastat hiljem, on NASA-st eemale jäänud nelik töötanud lihtsamatel kohtadel, nende põlastusväärne juht (James Cromwell) teenib leiba aga endiselt kosmoseagentuuris.
Ã?hel päeval hakkab vana Vene satelliit kosmoses jukerdama ning on oht, et see kukub Maale. Kuna iidne tehnika on ühe kõrvaldatud tiimi liikme (Clint Eastwood) loodud ning need eakad mehed on ka ainsad, kes seda parandada oskaks, kutsutaksegi nad tagasi.
