David Herbert Lawrence, inglise modernismi klassik, sündis 1885. aastal Nottinghami krahvkonna söekaevanduste piirkonnas Eastwoodis kaevuri ja kooliõpetajanna perekonnas. Lapsepõlves põetud kopsupõletik pani aluse hiljem teda piinanud tuberkuloosile, millesse ta 1930. aastal Prantsusmaal ka suri. Raskustega võideldes omandas Lawrence hariduse ja töötas lühikest aega kooliõpetajana Nottinghamis, kus kohtus sakslanna Frieda Weekleyga, kellest sai ta eluaegne kaaslane kõigil rahututel rännakutel Euroopas, Tseilonil, Austraalias, Mehhikos ja USA-s.
