Teose peategelaseks on arst ja poeet, kelle perekonnaelu pinged ja vaibumatu armastus oma muusa, teise mehe naise Lara vastu on nähtud Venemaad ja vene rahvast sajandi alguses vapustanud panoraamsete sündmuste taustal. Oma lüüriliseepilise laadi, psühholoogilise ilmekuse, inimese vaimumaailma süüvimise tõttu erineb romaan kõigist teistest oma aja teostest, mistõttu seda on võrreldud Lev Tolstoi «Sõja ja rahuga». Romaani järgi on tehtud menukas film (režissöör David Lean).
