Spiooniagentuuri Kontroll peakorterit rünnatakse ning nende agentide võrk paljastatakse. Ülemal (Alan Arkin) pole pärast seda muud valikut, kui saata järgmisele missioonile kohmakas analüütik Maxwell Smart (Steve Carell), kes on unistanud alati koostööst agentuuri superstaari, agent 23-ga (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson). Selle asemel saab tema partneriks imeilus, ent surmav agent 99 (Anne Hathaway). Väheste kogemustega Smart, kes on lisaks tehnilistele abivahenditele relvastatud vaid enda piiritu entusiasmiga, peab nüüd vastu astuma kuritegelikule organisatsioonile KAOS ning selle ohtlikule liidrile Siegfriedile (Terence Stamp).
Hoogsa actionkomöödia "Maxwell Smart - agent 86" aluseks on 60ndate kultusmainega komöödiaseriaal "Get Smart".
