Rooma, 44 aasta eKr. Senati vandenõu tagajärjel mõrvatakse Julius Caesar. Senat aga ei tea keisri testamendi olemasolust, kus Caesar nimetab oma järeltulijaks õepoja Octaviuse. Vaatamata sellele, et ta on kõigest 17-aastane, on Octavius valmis Rooma impeeriumit valitsema. Noormehel õnnestub pääseda senati saadetud palgamõrtsukate käest, sest talle on abiks gladiaator Tyrannus, kes lubas Caesarile noormeest iga hinna eest kaitsta. Roomas läheb võim senati kätte ning impeerium on kaose lävel. Kuid rahvas nõuab Caesarit. Octavius ja Tyrannus otsivad liitlasi Caesari poolehoidjate seast, et alustada verist võitlust võimu nimel.
