Alates 1975. aastast hakati tollases Eesti NSV Oktoobrirevolutsiooni ja Sotsialistliku Ülesehituse Riiklikus Keskarhiivis välja andma asutuste ajaloo teatmikke. Kuni 1980. aastate lõpuni ilmus neid terve rida.
Käesolev teatmik valmis juba 1987. a., kuid jäi käsikirja, kuna Riigiarhiivi peamiseks töölõiguks muutus 1990-ndatel aastatel omandireformi teatiste väljastamine.
Asutuste ajaloo teatmikud on mõeldud abimaterjaliks uurijatele arhiividokumentide kasutamisel ja vajaliku info leidmisel, samuti arhivaaride töövahendiks arhiivi komplekteerimisel, dokumentide fondeerimisel, ajalooõiendite koostamisel ja likvideeritud asutuste materjalide asukoha väljaselgitamisel.
