Uku Masing pidas aastail 1933–1940 Tartu Ülikooli usuteaduskonnas muu kõrval loenguid ka eesti usundist. Teose koostamisel ongi algkäsikirjana kasutatud tollast loengukonspekti. Kuigi autor arutleb eesti usundist rohkemgi soome-ugri usundi üle ülepea — ametliku õppekava järgi oligi teemaks eesti-soome usund —, lähenedes ainele võrdleva usundiloo seisukohalt, asetub see teos kindlalt eesleiduva eesti usundiloolise klassika, nimelt Oskar Looritsa \"Eesti rahvausundi maailmavaate\" ja Ivar Paulsoni \"Vana eesti rahvausu\" (1997, Ilmamaa) kõrvale.
