Ta oli alles nooruk, kui saabus Veneetsiasse, et õppida maalikunsti kuulsa meistri Tiziani käe all ja õppida tundma elu maailma kõige kõlvatumas linnas. Roomas jõudis ta loomevõimu tippu, ent tema kui kunstniku ja mehe uskumatu ettemääratus sai teoks hoopis Hispaanias, selle karmi ja kirgliku loodusega ja kõrvetava päikese ning tuliste tunnete maal.
