Elmar Kits (1913-1972) on eesti andekamaid maalijaid 20. sajandil. Tema loomeiga langes küll II maailmasõja aegsesse saksa ning sellele eelnenud ja järgnenud nõukogude vene okupatsiooniaega, kuid ta suutis säilitada oma erksa ja ausa loojanatuuri, mis peegeldub tema teoste ajastule omastes avangardismiotsingutes. Käsitledes impressionistlikke, sürrealistlikke, abstraktseid ja isegi sotsialistliku realismi suundumusi eesti kunstis, ei saa jätta mainimata Elmar Kitse loomingut. Hoolimata rohketest ametlikest tellimustöödest on aus suhtumine kunstilistesse tõekspidamistesse taganud tema loomingu kestvuse tänaseni.
