Mure looduse pärast on suurenenud käsikäes inimese majandustegevuse kasvuga.
Eelmise sajandi alguses hakati ka Eestis muretsema põlispuude, suurte rändrahnude ja linnurikaste merelahtede käekäigu pärast. Veidi hiljem pälvisid tähelepanu samuti metsad, kooslused, maastikud. Ümbruse hoidmisega tegelesid esialgu mitmed vastutustundlikud maaomanikud, õpetajad, metsamehed. Riiklikult mõtestatud tegevuseni jõuti 1935. aastal vastu võetud looduskaitse seaduse toel.
Raamatus antakse ülevaade seaduse sünniloost ning meie looduskaitse saavutustest sõjaeelsel perioodil.
