Goethe suur elutöö on kaheosaline tragöödia «Faust» (I-1808, II-1832), mille loomine kestis üle kuuekümne aasta.
Legend doktor Faustist tekkis Saksamaal juba XVI sajandil. Faust ise on ajalooline kuju - üks saksa humaniste. Rahvasuu rääkis selle õpetatud mehe uskumatuist imetegudest ja kokkuleppest kuradiga, kes kohustus teda eluajal teenima ja vastutasuks pidi saama kord doktori hinge. Legend levis rahvaraamatuis ja andis juba enne Goethet ka ilukirjanduslikke töötlusi (Marlowe). Goethe vormis selle aine mõtterikkaks kunstiteoseks, põimides sellesse inimkonda erutavaid probleeme ja elavat kaasaega.
