Kolumbia kirjanik Gabriel Garcia Marquez (s. 1928) saavutas maailmakuulsuse romaaniga Sada aastat üksildust (1967), millest kujunes ühtlasi Ladina-Ameerika maagilise realismi tähtteos. Romaan esitab Buendiade suguvõsa loo. Ja Macondo küla või väikelinna tekkimise ning hävimise loo. Geograafiliselt kaardilt puuduv, kirjanikufantaasias loodud Macondo mahutab endasse kogu Kolumbia, - aga võib-olla kogu Ladina-Ameerika - tema müüdid, eksootika ja ebausu, üle kõige aga üksilduse, mille juured asuvad vägivallas ja vihkamises, eneseuhkes isemeelsuses, võimuihas ning enesearmastuses. Sellest vabenemise võimalusi näeb kirjanik ülluses ning armastuses.
1982.aastal omistati kirjanikule Nobeli kirjanduspreemia eeskätt just nimetatud üldinimlike joonte kujundajana.
