Aasta on 1929 ja 9-aastane Chiyo müüakse Kyoto geishamajale, kus teda koheldakse julmalt nii omanike kui ka kadeda peageisha Hatsumomo poolt. Lõpuks päästetakse tüdruk Mameha poolt, kes on Hatsumomo suurim rivaal ning ta hakkab treenima teda artistilistes ja sotsiaalsetes oskustes, mida geishad peavad hästi oskama. Tulevik hakkab aga tumedam tunduma, sest II Maailmasõda on liginemas Jaapanile. Film põhineb Arthur Goldeni romaanil.
