Eepos oli tuntud ja hinnatud arvukais iidseis Lähis-Ida keelkondades ja kultuurides, eriti sumeri, akkadi, paabeli ja hetiidi orbiidis. Nimikangelane on omalaadis esimene, põlistus aga järelpõlves Achilleusest ja Odysseusest Kalevipojani ja Karutapjani, arvukais «igaviku otsijais« sangareis läbi aegade.
