Poola kirjanikule maailmakuulsuse ja Nobeli kirjandusauhinna toonud ajalooline romaan I sajandi Rooma elust. Ristiusu ja paganliku Rooma võitlus tõi keiser Nero ajal kaasa kristlaste verise tagakiusu.
Johannese evangeeliumist pärit pealkiri viitab Jeesusele ja tähendab: "Kuhu sa lähed?". Loo põhiteljeks on Rooma patriitsi Vinitiuse ja kauni Lygia armastuslugu. Kuningliku päritoluga Lygia on kristlane. Vägisi Lygiat kosida ihkav Vinitius õpib neiu headuse kaudu tundma kristlikku halastust, kannatlikkust ja andestust.
Esimest korda ilmus romaan eesti keeles 1933.
