Raamatu peategelane Patrick Branden on transvestiit, kes sündis 1960. aastatel ühes väljamõeldud Iiri väikelinnas ning põgeneb sealt ja oma purjus kasuema juurest otsima iseennast ja oma pärisema. Teda ootab terve rida õnnetumalt või õnnelikumalt lõppevaid seiklusi, ta hakkab prostituudiks, teda süüdistatakse sidemetes IRA-ga ja pommiplahvatuse korraldamises, kuid ta pääseb ja säilitab oma hämmastava optimismi.
Raamatu põhjal tegi filmirežissöör Neil Jordan 2005. aastal samanimelise filmi, mille peaosas mängis Cillian Murphy ning stsenaariumi kaasautor oli ka Patrick McCabe. Varem on eesti keeles ilmunud McCabe'i romaan «Lihunikupoiss» (1999).
