Romaani sündmustik leiab aset 14. sajandi keskel Allotria saareriigis, mille tehnilises arengutasemes ja kultuurivormides on pilatud tänapäeva Euroopale omast elulaadi. Peategelase Niccolo Casarmana jutustusena esitatud teos on üks Ristikivi loomingu lustakamaid näiteid, milles ei puudu aga ühiskonnakriitiline alatoon.
