Nimeka rootsi kirjaniku P. O. Sundmani (1922-1992) romaan teisest nimekast rootslasest, insenerist ja maadeavastajast Salomon August Andréest ning tema traagiliselt lõppenud õhulennust 1897. aastal, mil ta koos kahe kaaslasega üritas esimesena jõuda põhjapoolusele.
Lugu leiab aset mitte lihtsalt rahvusvahelise maadeavastamise palaviku taustal, vaid meeles tuleb pidada veel kahte aspekti: ühelt poolt oli Rootsi ja rootslaste jaoks vaja tõestada, et ligi kakssada aastat peale Põhjasõda ollakse ikka veel üks suurte hulgast, teisalt tuli aga norralastel iga hinna eest tõestada oma jõudu ja pealehakkamist.
Autor kasutab romaanis temale omast napisõnalist ja täpset stiili, mis on omane ka Islandi saagade stiilile, rõhutades looduse suurust, inimese tühisust, isiksuse tugevust ja selle tähendust.
