Italo Calvino (1923-1985), üks vaieldamatult omapärasemaid itaalia kirjanikke, sündis Kuuba saarel teadlaste perekonnas. Esimene romaan ilmus 1947 -- «Ämblikuvõrkude rada» (Il sentiero dei nidi di ragno). Järgnevad teosed, mis ka eesti keeles olemas, näiteks «Poolitatud vikont» (Il vicote dimezzato), «Parun puu otsas» (Il barone rampante), «Olematu rüütel» (Il cavaliere inesistente), «Nähtamatud linnad» (Le cittá invisibili). Aastaid tegeles Calvino itaalia muinasjuttude kogumise ja töötlemisega. Eesti keelde on tõlgitud kaks väikest kogumikku. «Palomar» ilmus 1983. aastal.
