Täpsete ja keeruliste astronoomiliste seadmete valmistamisel sai Schmidt kasutada ainult vasakut kätt - parema oli ta kaotanud noorukieas. 1930. a. leiutas Schmidt uut tüüpi teleskoobi, mis tõi talle postuumselt maailmakuulsuse.
