Joann Saarniidu (1909-1984) loomingus kohtume väga sageli mõne veekoguga – olgu selleks dramaatiline meri, kaljude vahele peitunud järvesilm või käänuliselt voolav oja. Omamoodi võtab see metafoorselt kokku ka tema enda elutee – põgenemine nõukogude vangilaagrisse sõitnud rongilt ja jalgsi üle järvi täis pikitud Venemaa Euroopasse jõudmine, saabumine üle ookeani oma uuele kodumaale, mälestuseks kaasas Saaremaa rannikul veedetud soojad päevad.
