Kritiseerides kuulsa Preisi sõjandusteoreetiku Carl von Clausewitzi seisukohti, leiab Keegan, et sõda on hoopis midagi muud kui poliitika ja diplomaatia, sest seda peavad mehed, kelle elukäsitlus ja oskused on sootuks teised kui poliitikutel ja diplomaatidel.
