Film on vändatud skandaalse kirjaniku Hunter S. Thompsoni romaani põhjal. Ajakirjanik Raoul Duke(Johnni Depp) saab ülessandeks kirjutada Las Vegases toimuvast mootorrataste kõrbe rallist. Kaasa sõidab tema samoalasest advokaat Dr.Gonzo(Benicio Del Toro). Kuid kogu avansiks saadud raha eest ostavad nad suures koguses erinevaid narkootikume ja rendivad kalli auto, ning hakkavad Las Vegases kogu oma kraami piirideta tarbima. Mõlemad peaosalised on kogu filmi vältel täielikult pilves ja suur võistluse kajastamisest ei tule muidugi midagi välja.
