Ärimees Paul Kirby ja ta abikaasa Amanda tegid Dr. Alan Grantile pakkumise lennata üle Isla Sorna saare, et näha sauruseid. Dr. Grant aga ei tea, et Paul ja Amanda tulid hoopis sinna enda poega otsima, kes oli mõned nädalad tagasi saarele läinud. Ootamatu maandumine viib 7-liikmelise seltskonna saarele, purunenud lennuki ja väheste relvadega. Tekib aga küsimus, et kes suudab sellest seltskonnas eluga pääseda ja kas kadunud laps leitakse ülesse.
Filmi rezissööriks polnud seekord Steven Spielberg, vaid Joe Johnoston, kes on tuntuks saanud filmiga " Jumanji". Spielberg ise oli produtsendiks.
