Raamat algab lapsepõlvemälestustega Raplast ning kirjeldab 1905. ja 1917. a. sealseid revolutsioonilisi sündmusi ning autori poliitiliste vaadete kujunemist. Järgneb ebaõnnestunud töökohaotsing Petrogradis, Oktoobrirevolutsioon ja esimene saksa okupatsioon, autori tegevus Noorproletaarlaste Ühingus, õpetajaamet Setumaal, reisid Šveitsi, tegevus Tartus, 1924. a. 1. detsembri sündmused ning vangistus. Autor vabanes 1931. aastal ning reisis Nõukogude Liitu. 1933. a. saadeti ta Taani Meremeeste ja Sadamatööliste Internatsionaali eesti sektsiooni tööd korraldama. Pärast 1940. a. pööret töötas autor ajalehe "Noorte Hääl" ja ajakirja "Looming" juures.
