Staažikas harrastusornitoloog, Eesti Ornitoloogiaühingu auliige Endel Edula (s. 1928) on linde (112 liiki) ja nende pesi (ca 19000) uurinud juba 1943. aastast peale. Tookord karjas käies sai see huvi alguse ning on püsinud tänaseni. Ta peamised tähelepanekud on kogutud sünnikodu lähedalt Vardja külast Närskalt. Käesolevas raamatus püüab autor üldistada oma pikaajalisi vaatlustulemusi ning paljused raamatutes avaldatut. Ta kirjutab inimestele kodu lähedal kõige enam silma hakanud lindude käitumisest, sulissõprade kevadisest saabumisest, pesaehitusest, poegade kasvatamisest ning sügisesest ärarändest.
