1964. aastal sündinud Banana Yoshimotot on nimetatud Jaapani X-põlvkonna kõige eredamaks esindajaks. Tema esimene lühiromaan «Köök» (1994) sai noorte seas väga populaarseks ja seda müüdi üle kahe miljoni eksemplari. Yoshimoto kangelased on tavaliselt noored naised, kes on oma perekonnast eemaldunud. Nad töötavad kohvikutes ja baarides, kuulavad Lääne muusikat ja elavad mõnevõrra nihestatud elu. Nende elu tähistavad kummalised kokkusattumused, tavatud kogemused ja vestlused, mis näivad olevat väga tähendusrikkad, kuid ei vii kuhugi.
