Iirlane James Joyce (1882-1941) on kirjanik, kes on tõenäoliselt avaldanud 20. sajandi kirjandusele suuremat mõju kui ükski tema kaasaegne. "Kunstniku noorpõlveportree" on Joyce'i esimene romaan, mida ta alustas Iirimaal ja lõpetas 12 aastat hiljem Triestes, Itaalias. Tegemist on autobiograafilise teosega, milles kujutatakse peategelase Stephen Dedaluse elukäiku lapsepõlvest saadik üliõpilasaastateni. Et tegemist on iirlasega, on vältimatud ka religioossed kõhklused. Raamatu lõpuks on Stephen leppinud sellega, et temast on kujunemas kirjanik, kelle saatuseks on pagendus.
