Autor ütleb teose kohta nii: ""Lapsepõlvest Malleta" on hilispubeka karm ja halastuseta enesevaatlus. Romaani tegevus toimub 1970-ndate aastate lõpus Eesti Üliõpilaste Ehitusmaleva sillaehitajate rühmas, nõnda on teos esimene nn malevaromaan eesti kirjanduses. Ehitatakse muuseas Pärnu Papiniidu silda. EKP Keskkomitee sekretär Rein Ristlaan nimetas tööd ühel ideoloogianõupidamisel meie suurepärase komsomoliürituse – ehitusmaleva – pahatahtlikuks laimamiseks, küsis, milleks kirjastus avaldab seesugust Nõukogude-vastast prahti. Teost piitsutasid hoolikalt komsomoli- ja malevaringkonnad, ent toonaste juhtkriitikutelt Vaino Vahingult ja Linnar Priimäelt pälvis romaan üksnes kiidusõnu, kusjuures viimane pidas seda kaua autori paremaks teoseks üldse!"
